NSI Put To The Test
TotalCare Responds to Fake Network Crash

During the early morning hours of March 30th Michael Gagnon, Network Administrator for the Connecticut Carpenters Benefit Funds in Hamden wanted to have a little fun.

“I like to play with him a little bit,” Gagnon said about Brandon Aylesworth, Senior Support Engineer for NSI TotalCare. “But it was also kind of a test.”

Gagnon wanted to see if NSI TotalCare, a package of Web-based remotely managed monitoring and maintenance services, would really live up to its promise to be ‘watching’ his network all the time.

“I knew they were picking up on some smaller things that were going on, but this would have been a big catastrophe.”

Around 6 a.m. the Network Administrator brought his network down to replace a switch and some battery packs. “I was going to tell Brandon in an email later in the day, but he beat me to it.”

An email came from NSI after the ‘grace period’ that follows every incident (to avoid reacting to every hiccup):

Michael,
Showing firewall went down and back up again around 6am, as well as an
intermittent loss in communication with the servers. All appears ok now; I can
connect to servers as well as firewall.

Gagnon’s reaction came straight from George Orwell’s classic novel 1984. “Big Brother’s watching,” he said.

It’s exactly what the Connecticut Carpenters Benefit Funds had hoped for when signing up for NSI TotalCare, which according to Gagnon is one simple thing, “It’s peace of mind.”
