Changing Laws You Need to Know About

In the wake of some high profile security breaches, data management and data security have never been more critical, especially with new requirements in several northeastern states.

For example, a new law in Connecticut requires employers to "destroy, erase, or make unreadable" personal information on computer files and documents prior to disposal of those files.

A new law in New York strengthens that state's identity theft law and put pressure on companies to be more careful about handling sensitive data.

And in Massachusetts there's a new regulation that sets standards for the protection of personal Information.

Federal ‘e-discovery' laws also require data protection.

NSI recommends that organizations perform a risk assessment to determine where information is located and who can access it and then develop specific policies outlining how information is to be handled.

The bottom line is organizations should scrub computer hard drives of all information before disposal.
