Guidelines for Buying Previously-Owned Equipment

If you are looking for a bargain, used IT equipment can be a good deal - provided you do your homework, ask questions, and know who you're dealing with.

Get the Facts
Some IT resellers label equipment as "refurbished" or "reconditioned", but because the condition of equipment can vary be sure to ask for details before you make a purchase.

How Used?

If you're considering used computers, servers, or monitors be mindful of their age. Anything 12-months old or less is acceptable.

Protect Yourself
Be sure to purchase reputable products that come with the original manufacturer's warranty. Often “refurbished” equipment will have a 90-day guarantee. At minimum, make sure the reseller has a 30-day return policy. In some cases you might be able to purchase an extended warranty.

Price Points
Obviously, you don't want to pay too much, but at the same time, paying too little can be risky. We recommend you not go higher than 75-percent of what the equipment would cost new and no lower than 50-percent. And before taking a deeply discounted deal, be sure to check on the reseller's reputation at Web sites such as www.resellerratings.com .
